Reading other people is interesting as you would know their secrets and their opinions regarding certain issues. However, it was quite difficult to understand diaries that are written by people who you are not familiar with. For example, I did not know who And Warhol was until Dr. Edwin told us about him. Therefore, I was not able to understand his diary but I did make a guess that his career might have something to do with arts. And I nearly correct as Andy Warhol is a famous painter, film producer and entrepreneur. His works include the painting of America famous product such as Campbell and Coca-Cola. I bet he must be wealthy rich by just producing arts. Not all are that lucky as he is. Anyway, when I started to read his diary, I was not sure why he was laughing at the invitation card to President Carter’s inaugural. Only he knows what he is writing about. However, Dr. Edwin explained to us that he is a gay therefore “Mr. and Mrs. Andy Warhol” was like a joke to him.
The second diary that we read was Kafka, 1910 Diaries. I had heard his name before as I saw my brother reading about his work or autobiography. But back then I did not care much to ask him who Kafka is. Kafka is a German writer who wrote short stories and novels. His work was usually controversial and difficult to be understand especially by someone like me…but with the help of Dr. Edwin I managed to understand that he was expressing his disappointment to the education that he received as he claimed that it was the reason to his loss of imagination. Basically, he was portraying the issue of the impact of education in one’s life and that might be the reason why he kept repeating lines “…education has done me great harm in some ways”.
Overall, we learned how diaries tell about writers’ lives, their opinions, ideas or comments on certain issue. I strongly believe that reading diary can be used in language classroom or as a tool to improve students’ English proficiency.
